Artur Woodroffe has always been concerned about safety,” says Michael Woodroffe, his brother from a previous marriage, who also has a tattoo of a skull and crossbones. “For a variety of reasons, it’s something that’s worked for us. It seems to keep us alive. It’s very emotional for us.”

Though Woodroffe can see the tattoos only in the mirror, they’ve become part of who he has become, which is what makes his family so uncomfortable and upsetting. “The tattoos have been the only thing that I can think of that we’ve gotten that you can tell us has no to do with what is wrong with you personally,” says his father.

“But we are getting really afraid we’re going to get run over by a truck and killed,” he adds. “The tattoos do reflect who he was and it’s really unsettling.”

Some are worried that his presence will hurt his future job prospects. “We’re all terrified he’ll hurt things if he’s here,” says his girlfriend of three years, and his mother.

“I know it’s him,” her cousin, who still has his work ID, says, laughing. “If this is him, I am absolutely scared for my life.”

And as for what’s next? There are no plans to relocate to Arizona.

“It is just a place I want to be in life after, but it’s such a long way from our home,” Woodroffe says. “There are places I want to go, but there is just nowhere at the moment I could actually call home.”

He wants to find a permanent home in another state and doesn’t feel the need to put up with the abuse any longer.

“I’m not going to change the way I live or how I behave,” he says. “If anything, I would feel more comfortable with it.”
