Are Fashion Trends Changing the Way We Look?
Fashion is an art form of dressing, in a particular time and place and in a particular context, and of clothing, accessories, footwear, life styles, makeup, hair style, and body postures. In its everyday usage, however, the word simply means a style defined by the fashion business as what is trendy. Trends arise because there is always something new to try out, something old that gets trashed out of date quickly, or something that just looks good. There are many different aspects of fashion which influence its use and impact on our lives; for instance, how a dress can make someone look feminine or masculine, what makes a casual outfit look smart, how an item of clothing can change the way people walk or speak, or what makes a certain piece of clothing appropriate to certain environments or situations. This is just the tip of the iceberg, and the only thing that limits the impact of trends is our own perception of what is trendy and how we should feel about it.
There are many ways to gauge the popularity of a trend – people’s choice to wear it, its ability to fit into one’s budget and to express oneself, how well it suits the wearer’s personality, how easily it can be worn, how well it matches with existing outfits, and last but not least, its looks on the outside. If you are buying a particular outfit because it fits you well but the rest of your closet is filled with clothes of a completely different style, then you’re likely to feel that you don’t have anything in your closet to suit you. You could easily conclude that you will never be able to find that perfect outfit again, and may even come to the conclusion that you’ll never be able to fit into your clothes again. When this happens, people tend to be quite judgmental and harsh on fashion trends – they tend to see if other people feel the same way about an outfit, compare their reactions, comment negatively on the trend, and generally take it as a personal criticism.
People are often torn between what is fashionable and what is in fashion. Fashion is subjective, so there isn’t one common answer for what is fashionable and what isn’t. Fashion trends are constantly changing, coming back, going out of fashion, coming back in another new form, and then going out of fashion yet again. As a matter of fact, some types of clothes will never go out of style!
