Alena Zavarzina – A Life Spreading Her Skills Across Europe

Born as Alena Grigoryleva in what was then the province of Smilova, she reached international fame in the early 1990s when she became one of the first female figure skaters to win a silver medal at the Olympics. Since then, she went on to win four more Olympic gold medals, as well as several world records and countless awards. She retired in 2021 but has since been involved in skating exhibitions, coaching and serving as a commentator. Currently, she lives in Europe and works as a counselor.

Career Though there are very few details available pertaining to Alena Zavarzina’s career, it is certain that she had been involved in some form of skating for most of her life. The first documented evidence of her participation in sports as a child can be seen in a photo of her with her brother and fellow-skipper from the same family in the yearbook. In addition to that, Zavarzina also skated for a short period of time for another family member of the same age. It is possible that she may have even tried ice hockey but never made it past the third level. However, all of this pales in comparison to her most recent profession which is almost certainly skating figure skating routines.
