Aero Socks and Cycling
Fashion and function go hand in hand when it comes to cycling socks. They do not have to be the same color, or the same pattern either. It all depends on your purpose and what you are looking for in the pair of socks you choose to wear. A great pair of socks for a classic road trip can be drastically different than a pair for riding time. Aero technology, which is used to create these socks, has been around for quite some time but it was only until recently that they started being made for cycling.
Classic Cycling Aero Socks are known to use a soft aero cell material which is worn very well by some of the top professional teams in the country. The difference between cycling’s her socks and those used in other sports is the fact that the cell is made out of silicone. Silicone is a very flexible material that has the capability to mold itself to the shape of the leg and the foot in order to provide the most aerodynamic drag along the length of the leg. By using a combination of silicone and nylon knit fibers, a cycling team has the ability to control their air drag.
While the very sock for cycling does a great job of preventing hypoxia and decreasing resistance to the effects of turbulence, they are also excellent at minimizing sweat build up and odor. This is because the material acts as a sponge in which moisture is soaked up instead of being soaked up by the fiber of the foot. Another advantage to the area socks is that they provide an increased amount of air flow over a greater area of the foot compared to standard socks, which will greatly affect the amount of sweat that can be evaporated. The biggest downfall to these are socks is that they are not the most breathable pair of socks on the market and usually result in sweaty feet. In colder weather, it may be necessary to remove some of them during the winter months to prevent frostbite.
