Kathryn Dennis is a thirty-two-year-old widow with a four-year-old son and a Masters Degree. Kathryn works as an attorney in the private practice section of a law firm. While there, Kathryn has developed a large network of friends and family including her friend and fellow attorney, Frank Kern. But when Frank is accused of the theft of business funds in California, Kathryn is devastated.
After several unsuccessful attempts at rehabilitation through marriage counseling, Kathryn decides to seek out a mentor in order to regain her sense of self and to find a positive direction in her life. In doing so, Kathryn runs into a new problem in that her own age prevents her from legally working in the legal field. However, she remains determined to make amends in her relationship with Frank and returns to work in the legal firm as a paralegal. But when Frank’s partner falls ill, she is forced to leave him and pursue a career elsewhere. Shortly thereafter, Frank gets another partner in the same firm and becomes eligible for retirement.
As her years of service in the firm nears completion, she realizes she wants to try her hand at the more challenging field of criminal law. But before getting any further in the profession, Frank makes one last visit to his dying mother. But when he discovers she has made the decision to have a double mastectomy, it changes the course of their lives forever. It also prompts Kathryn to question her motives for entering the legal profession in the first place. With this final visit to her destiny, Kathryn finally decides to give herself a chance in the world of criminal law and sets out on a remarkable and inspirational journey.
