Abigail Gorman became known because of her status as a deaf person in the socially conservative south. This made it difficult for her to find work when she first began appearing on stage. Gorman eventually developed an appreciation for the deaf community and founded The National Association of the Deaf and Blind. She also started her own magazine called “The New American deaf”. Gorman has remained active in the deaf community, speaking out on issues that affect the deaf and working to promote literacy among the deaf population. Today, more people want to learn sign language as a result of the growing deaf population.

Gorman’s courage in showing her love and support for the deaf community inspired countless people to learn how to sign language. Today, there are many courses available to teach people how to communicate using this language. In addition to learning how to use sign language to communicate with others, other programs are available that show people how to read lips, how to make hand signals, and how to understand body language.
