A Good Running Hat Can Be More Comfortable Than You Think

If you are a serious runner, you probably already know the importance of a good running hat. It is not only important for your protection, but it also helps to keep your head temperature optimal for optimum performance. With that being said, you might be wondering which hat is best, an open-head or a closed? Both have their own pros and cons, so it’s really just a matter of preference.

The most obvious pro when it comes to an open-head running hat is the fact that they draw moisture away from your head, which helps to keep you cooler during evaporating sweat during a run. At the same time, the better quality running hats also allow air to enter through their thin fabric to help cool a runner as well and provide a higher level of airflow to the head. This airflow allows the sweat to stay on your head rather than settling into your neck and forehead which can cause stinging, chaffing, and discomfort. A mesh hat is an excellent choice if you find that you get a little sweaty down there. The mesh catches the sweat and directs it away from your skin, which allows the rest of your head to stay dry. You will still feel comfortable, even after getting a bit sweaty.

On the flip side, a closed-head is usually a good running hat choice if you are concerned with aerodynamics. Closed hats work well at reducing the amount of wind that flows past your head as well as the air resistance caused by your hair and scalp. These will definitely help you stay more comfortable. However, they do not offer the airflow and aerodynamics benefits that the mesh hats do which mean that they will not make you feel as comfortable as they might otherwise. A mesh hat will still keep you warm and dry while providing excellent aerodynamics.
