Maria Clara, whose real name is Maria Clara Maria Josefa de Leon, is the most famous mestizo heroine in Noli Me Tomete, a book by Jose Rizal. Her role as the romantic partner of Benigno Aquino was a turning point in Philippine history when she turned out to be the first Filipina to win the citizenship of Puerto Rico after the Spanish Revolution. Her role as the ideal national heroine of the Filipino people has become a hallmark in Filipino culture, particularly for the feminine idealistic and romantic idealism that she epitomizes. Her famous quote, “Maria Clara, ayaw ko talaga (I am not like other women),” has become an instantly iconic expression in Philippine popular culture.

When Benigno Aquino was asked about marrying Maria Clara he said, “If I had to choose, I would rather die in my bed than be married to another woman.” Several theories have been advanced as to why this marriage failed. One theory is that her betrothed, Benigno was not contented with the women already present in his life. Another theory is that Benigno Aquino himself did not love Maria, but was lured into a life of adultery with her. This union eventually ended in divorce.

Maria Clara’s marriage to Benigno ended in a divorce for personal reasons, but she remained very friendly with her husband throughout their marriage. It is then said that, Benigno Aquino died a happy death in the arms of his wife. In a letter written by his wife, Maria Clara expressed her feelings for Benigno, writing that he was the love of her life and that they had been made for each other. Maria Clara and Benigno Aquino were the first ever Filipina and United States national models who were married.
