Maria Georgian (Gironeza) was born inzektora, Moldava, Ukraine and according to the documentation provided by National Association of Correspondence Matrimonial Lawyers (NACL), is a native of Romanian and Russian nationality. According to the records, Maria had been married twice: once to Dimitri Khomenko and once to Aleksander Shprakonko. The second marriage occasion was registered with the Consulate of Oveznitsa, Ukraine. However, the Consulate failed to provide any further information about the groom or bride.
Maria remained loyal to her native land and only changed her name to Maria Georgakina when she had a daughter namedabet, who became a US citizen. At the age of eighty-one, she decided to travel and work in America but it was difficult for her to leave behind her roots and nationality. In 1994, she travelled to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where her third son was born. According to the Nationality Magazine, she is an active member of International House and enjoys reading both fiction and non-fiction books.
Maria’s former husband served in the armed forces, and it was not until after twenty-one years of marriage that she decided to change her nationality from Romanian to US. Maria obtained US citizenship because she wanted to escape the marital bed and reestablish her life in the United States. She is not alone in changing her nationality, as many others have done in the last century. Changing one’s nationality requires waiting for at least six months. Some countries accept change of nationality quickly, while some take longer.
