Luisa Schrader is a famous German author who has sold more than seventy novels in English and one in German. Her stories are full of suspense, adventure, and love. They portray the cleverness and courage of women in many ways. One of my favorite books, The Mystery of High Water Street, was written by Luisa Schrader and features a main character named Anna Blau. In this novel, Anna Blau tries to solve the mystery behind her parents’ divorce and returns to the place where she was born, while her new partner Christian tries to protect their young daughter Flora from certain danger.
This is the third of the Anna Blau series and although the first part was great, the second part was just as good. I liked that the city where they spend their days, Vienna, is depicted as an old city with narrow streets and cobbled paths, whereas London, as depicted in the book, is much larger and hustler’s haven. The characters’ separation and subsequent reunion were also portrayed in a touching and honest way. In the end, when the happy couple finally restores their lost trust and link, the reader learns that there is still a lot of passion between them.
When I read The Mystery of High Water Street, it reminded me of the stories that I have enjoyed from Luisa Schrader: tales with great depth that take twists and turns that bring the characters out of their comfort zone. The Mystery of High Water Street is the third in the series. Although the story is about a girl who moves to a new town and live with her new boyfriend, and although the girl eventually falls in love with a much older man, the theme of her tragic past remains, as does the love of her new life with a man thirty years her age. The Mystery of High Water Street is a very good read; it may even be the best-written of all of Luisa Schrader’s novels.
