A new style in socks for women, Pantherella Socks is coming out of England and based in London. The company makes a wide array of women’s clothing and accessories, including socks, which have become quite popular here in the U.K. As with most products here in England, the fashion here is always evolving and making itself more accessible to a greater range of women and children than ever before. These socks by Pantherella are no exception.
Pantherella socks were founded by the Rev. Hugh Lewis in 1937 in a little village called Pantherella, on the River Lea in Hampshire. He began his business by manufacturing a type of rock known as Pantherella wool socks, using only 100% pure Hessian cotton. This was a revolutionary move at that time because most people thought that cotton was a man-made, synthetic product. Hugh Lewis thought that cotton could be woven by the natural means and that would be his company’s secret.
The Pantherella brand was first manufactured and sold in the United States in the 1940’s but the demand didn’t materialise until the Egyptian revolution of the fifth year of the World War I. When the war was over, Lewis wanted to expand his business further into Europe but couldn’t because his passport was only issued in Germany so he had to start his business overseas. That’s when the idea came to his mind and he started to manufacture socks in both high quality Egyptian cotton and Hessian and combined these two fibres to create a better sock for the European market. Today, the mainstay of the brand is still Egyptian cotton but they also make high quality synthetic fibres such as polar fleece, gabardine and nylon. The fibres are all sourced from factories in China and they are then processed to produce the best quality products possible.
