Crazy Sock Day
On Crazy Sock Day, also known as Odd Socks Day and Silly Sock Day, people around the globe wear a pair of bright, mismatched socks to celebrate Down Syndrome awareness. The event falls on March 21, which is World Down Syndrome Day. The Crazy Sock Socks are brightly colored, short, elastic-style socks worn by those who suffer from the condition. Those who participate in the event wear the socks as they walk down the street, as well as during other daily activities. The goal is to make the public aware of Down Syndrome and to encourage parents to talk about their children with the public.
Each year, a group of mothers from all over the world will gather on this day to share stories, support each other, and to raise money for scholarships for those with Down Syndrome. The organization receives over a million dollars in financial support every year. Those who participate in crazy sock day can contribute money, serve as a hostess at events, sell products, and craft special unique items. Those who have an interest in learning more about Down Syndrome are encouraged to attend or sponsor a fundraiser. For those who would like to sponsor someone for Crazy Sock Day in their community, there are many organizations across the United States that partner with community groups to raise money and awareness for children with Down Syndrome.
The proceeds from the sale of crazy socks benefit Special Olympics, a nonprofit organization that gives children with Down syndrome the opportunity to compete in athletic competitions. All profits from the Crazy Sock Fair are donated to Special Olympics. Other proceeds from the Crazy Sock Day are given to the family members and caregivers of someone with Down Syndrome. Those who donate socks earn bonus prizes and are entered into drawings for gift certificates to local stores.
