Who is Abigail Green?
Abigail Green is a British tall ship. Abigail was originally bred by the Marquis de Lafayette at Saint-Malo in France, then bought by Queen Victoria in 1800. Queen Victoria later owned this beautiful yacht. Abigail is referred to as “The ship that takes the waters on which we sail” since she was purposely built to cruise long distances and is uniquely shaped to travel over water.
Abigail’s home port of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, is on the northern coast of England, at an area known as Plaistow Marshes. She sails under the Harbour Bridge from Newcastle upon Tyne and can be reached by longitude readings of 401 miles and by land lines at the pier in Newcastle upon Tyne. The local shipping lanes in Newcastle upon Tyne connects England and Scotland.
Abigail Green’s home port in Plaistow Marshes was one of the best places for shipbuilding during the Industrial Revolution. Her long trips across the ocean brought her to many ports around the world, including England, Spain, Barbados, Bermuda, San Diego, Florida, Pensacola, Mexico City, and New Orleans. The local shipping council in Newcastle upon Tyne approved a plan to build the largest yacht harbor in the world in Plaistow, allowing Abigail to visit many ports. The idea of having the largest yacht harbor in the world was originally implemented for the Queen, but plans were changed when Queen Victoria refused the idea. After her death, Queen Elisabeth continued the plan, which was eventually adopted and sanctioned by her successor, King George IV.
