Military Fashion Trends From the First World War to Today
Military fashion trends are a reflection of the ever-changing needs of soldiers at war. Uniforms, battle gear, and more often than not, the very things that make them distinct from one another is a source of inspiration for the designers and manufacturers of military equipment and clothes. Clothing is the most important part of a soldier’s wardrobe, which is why it’s also the focus of so many military fashion trends. Uniforms that are used in the military can range from the simple camo fatigues to the most advanced battle-gear designs, all of which are designed to provide functionality while simultaneously adhering to the strictest standards of dress code. In addition to army fatigues, other military fashion trends include the adoption of lighter weight, comfortable clothes like cargo pants and casual cargo shirts for field work and everyday use.
The military’s uniform and gear were originally developed as a protection from the hostile desert conditions and harsh climate during the early days of the nation’s existence. As time went by, this adaptation was formalized into the formation of the Marine Corps, the Air Force, the Navy, and the Army – each of which incorporated new tactical gear and clothing that worked better in specific environments and climates. Since uniforms were designed to be durable and able to endure extreme temperatures and elements, the military put particular emphasis on the materials used in making their attire. Military clothing includes everything from combat boots and pants to bodysuits and jackets. Since military personnel were expected to be away from the front lines for extended periods of time, these uniforms were made to be water resistant and keep the wearer cool.
Army boots have been around since the First World War, when the French developed the Para-Cord boots that would become an iconic fashion item for American soldiers. Originally these boots were made from cotton twill with reinforced toe posts and steel plates for extra protection, but later changed to canvas and rubber in order to be more comfortable. They are still worn extensively by military personnel today. The black boots are the most popular style, though other colors were created in the years after the First World War.
