Fashion Trends for Women in the 50’s

As the 50’s approached, many women made the choice to dress up more than they ever had before. Even though most 50’s women were not very comfortable with their appearance, there were still very noticeable and extreme fashion trends that were taking place. Initially, the clothing styles that emerged during this period of time were geared towards the “unisex” look. Basically, any piece of clothing could be worn by a woman no matter what her size, whether she was petite or large, if her skin color was light or dark, etc. Once this trend became popularized, other women soon followed suit and as the years went on, more pieces of clothing were created that would be suitable for just about any occasion and anyone looking to buy them was given a wide range to choose from.

Because the 50’s were tumultuous in so many ways, it became all the more important that women who were going to be out of work during the day found themselves dressing up appropriately. This was especially necessary when it came to purchasing clothing. Since most women worked during the day, clothing meant not only the ability to keep them warm but also to keep them fashionable so that they would be able to find a suitable outfit. Because the design of the time did not emphasize any sort of figure, the options for women were not as plentiful as they could have been. Women could find a great deal of variety in terms of their clothing, however, and eventually began dressing down, which was quite appropriate, because the lack of available options for the average woman in this era was vast.

With the onset of the new century and a greater awareness of one’s own body image, more women were beginning to feel comfortable in their own skin. In order to conform to these ever-changing and often times changing fashion trends, it became necessary for clothing designers to come up with new and innovative designs. One of the most notable designers of this period was Coco Chanel, who did much to bring about the beginnings of women’s fashion by offering women’s designs that were bolder and at the same time flattering. In fact, even now when it comes to 50’s fashions, you will often find designs that are inspired by Coco Chanel.
