The 1980s fashion trends are often cited as one of the most stylish years in history. With the rise in popularity of Michael Jackson and other funk artists, there was a movement away from the “accepted” Americana style of clothing and towards more rebellious, colorful styles. One trend that emerged was a greater emphasis on using clothing for gender and cultural reasons, rather than for fashion itself. Much of this clothing, particularly for women, revolved around brightly colored clothes in bold patterns and vibrant colors.
However, the 1980s fashion trends were also marked by a period of social change. Anti-Vietnam War demonstrations and the end of the “American dream” made people more accepting of different lifestyles, including those of a more urban living. Fashion became a more political symbol for many who wore it to express their view of how they felt about the social issues of the times. Even the “free spirit” of the decade began to incorporate clothing with its associated ideals of freedom and individuality.
Fashion trends are an ever-changing part of society. Just as a new era is ushered in, old styles become classic favorites for a particular season. Just as all fashion is individual, so too is each decade’s taste for what is trendy.
