The year 1933 witnessed a new look in fashion. Gone were the days when men wore tails and hats, they wore trousers with pleats, and ladies wore skirts. This was because the Third Reich was planning to implement their’make soldiers’ campaign, which meant that every officer on the front line of the army had to be dressed exactly the same as his subordinates, in order to make them look more uniform. This idea did not go down well with the German people, who saw their army men as being uncool for putting on such a dress code. Despite this, a change was needed so that everyone looked the same. This led to changes to the Third Reich’s fashion, with the end of ‘austere und schweren’ (literally: uniform and insignia).

The Third Reich’s army men were not the only ones who had to put on uniforms; so too, women had to follow the army’s example and dress exactly the same way as their male comrades. This also meant that they all had to stick to the same motif for their clothing, so that everything matched. As it was, the Third Reich had the largest number of Jews after all other races in Germany, and as such they also had to wear very different clothing than other people. After a while, these fashion trends became unpopular amongst the German population, especially after the rise of the National Socialist (Nazi) party. The party saw these changes in fashion trends as an attempt to’re-create’ the SS and its ideals of uniformity, thus making them ‘unfit’ to serve the German people.

After the introduction of a new code of uniformity, the world of fashion began to re-adjust itself, which was a good thing because it meant that people could finally wear what they wanted. The designs of the 1930s gave way to the designs of the 1940s and the fashions of the 1950s. Nowadays, you can find most of the clothing that you see being worn around the world being influenced by this period of German history. Whatever kind of outfit you are looking for, you will be able to find it in one form or another, even if it has only been in your imagination.
