Music Review: Height & Age by Casey Barnes

Casey Barnes is an Australian based singer-songwriter from the Gold Coast who has been playing shows for both local and international audiences alike. Most notably, he served as a cast member on the television series of The Block Party with Adam Lambert where he became known to the public. Now that he has become an established Nationality singer in the independent music scene in Australia, his musical style still resonates with audiences across the globe. The multi-dimensional vocal style of Casey Barnes can be found on all of his solo albums as well as on numerous collaborations including his writing partner Rhiannon giddens.

Height & Age have only released a few singles through the band’s existence but it already seems to have a solid fan base. These tracks “Take Me Away” and “Keep It Low” have been crowd favorites in the Australian music scene which is evident of their universal appeal. Both of these songs have been featured on Pitchfork’s “Best Rock Songs” list. Additionally, Casey Barnes was also one of the founding members of The Block Party, an Australian band whose highly successful careers spanned four decades. His musical style and influence on this band can be seen on several of their albums including Today and Tonight.

Height & Age guitarist-singer Rhiannon Giddens also has an extensive history in the Australian Nationality music scene. Her bandcamp page is a testament to her lengthy career in the band that began as a side project for singer/songwriter David Cook. She is also a member of Bouncing Souls, A Perfect Circle, Beechwood and Ray Wylie Hubbard. Currently, her solo work is quite dominant on the independent circuit where her most popular songs include the singles “Just One Girl” and “The End of Everything.” Her extensive bass experience has also allowed her to play keyboards for artists such as Jamie Cullum and Kasabian.
