Luke Casey, a thirty eight-year-old American, is the Manager of Nationality for a major corporation. He and his wife have been married since he was sixteen, and they have two children, ages five and three respectively. His nationality is American, but he identifies as Irish Catholic because his parents are Irish, and he was adopted at birth. Prior to starting work at the Nationality, he worked as a salesman for an international company, and prior to that, he worked as a recruiter, salesman and personal trainer, all in the US.

As a Manager of Nationality, Luke works with the head of HR, conducting background checks on potential employees and doing background checks on their family members, both native and non-native. He is also the company’s chief financial officer. He has been with the company for almost eleven years, and is a graduate of De La Salle College in Portland, Oregon. His educational background is as diverse as his experience, starting out as an electrical engineering major at Roesler College in Portland, Oregon, to a four-year degree at De La Salle University in Grand Haven, Connecticut.

While working at the Nationality, he also partners with Dr. Miguel Delgado, a Mexican American plastic surgeon, who specializes in facial reconstruction, and Rosemary Holloway, a Chinese American motivational speaker, who help him develop his job performance skills. Dr. Delgado and Mrs. Holloway help him with their speaking engagements, writing, and business plans, while helping him with his surgical and rehabilitation skills. It is implied throughout the novel that Luke has been discriminated against at work because of his nationality, and that he sometimes feels unsafe amongst his coworkers. He tries to overcome these problems by working diligently, staying focus on his goals, and always being respectful of his co-workers.
