Belle was born in Paris, France. Her real name is Elle, an anglicized version of her original name, and her real nationality is French. This is why she hid her age and nationality when applying to different film and Broadway theaters seeking work. Of course her age is a bit important in this regard; because in most English speaking countries, young adults who are under twenty five years of age need to wait a few years before applying for a passport, which is what Belle needed to travel to America.
Belle’s marriage to Beast was rather unhappy. She decided that it was not good for her family, and with her new wealth she wanted to spend it on happiness, and to have a stable, loving relationship. However, Beast tried to force her into a more submissive relationship, which only made Belle hate him even more. Her marriage ended after a brief affair with Beast’s butler, Mathieu.
