Claire Stern is a successful executive who has been married and divorced four times. She was raised as a boy, and her parents separated when she was very young, and she was adopted by two American servicemen. Her father was a bricklayer, and she was sent to live with foster parents for a year after her adoption. Claire grew up with two brothers in two different households until she went to college and got a degree in history. Now, she is happily married with two children of her own, and she has ditched her Boy Scout identity in favor of being a successful executive.
Claire and her husband have been trying to find each other for many years, but they have never been quite sure how to match up romantically with the other half of their lives. As they have both nationalities, they often find themselves having affairs outside of their union. Claire has always dated other people, but her nationality (American) tends to put her at a disadvantage. Because her husband is not American, she has always dated Europeans. Claire also sometimes dates Jewish men, though she always has the reservations about the religion. Her nationality issues make it difficult for her to be open about her feelings for Jewish men, even though she knows that they’re perfectly capable of love.
Claire is now trying to find a foreign man to be her partner, even though she knows that this relationship will only last as long as her nationalities allow it. Claire’s husband is much more accepting of her Jewish heritage, though he doesn’t like her nationality, and she’s still uncertain of her own feelings towards her partner. This book is a good read, with good advice about how to date a foreign national without the worry of age differences. I would recommend this to someone who’s either only had a few relationships or is new to dating, since it will provide you with the advice you need to know whether to date within your nationalities, as well as some advice on what nationalities are better for dating partners.
