Height has always been a highly important thing in the fashion industry, especially with celebrities such as Kate Hammer and Gwen Stefani who have chosen to ‘play it straight’ when it comes to their height. So what does it really mean to be short? Does it matter in the professional world or is just part of being a famous celebrity?
Height is not just an issue for the little people: taller people can have a more fulfilled and rewarding career than shorter ones. Height has a lot more to do with ‘look’ than it does with actual height: for example, supermodels often have a smallish bosom, which gives them an air of sexiness that is not necessarily true of their height. In a similar vein, if you have a large bust then this will probably work to your advantage, even if you are shorter, as a larger bust will project a more glamorous image. The same goes for height: if you’re under six feet, you are going to seem smaller than those who are slightly taller – if you are tall but shorter, you might find that some of the smaller roles that you get don’t come naturally, and could end up as an afterthought in your career. Being under the wrong side of the height spectrum can have a serious effect on your looks.
Height in itself isn’t really something that you should take too seriously, unless it is affecting you negatively in a negative way. It’s best to focus on your looks in a more positive light: if you’re confident about your height, you will also be more likely to project the kind of confidence that will get you places in the professional world. If you are really bothered about your height, it might be worth consulting an expert – there are plenty of reasons why you might be short, so try to look at those and see if there is a real problem.
