The bindi is one of the most important and widely used hand-made South Indian garments. There are many different forms and variations of this South Indian fashion trend from the traditional kind, which is a roundish bluish-green coloured paste, to the more modern and fashionable batik, which is made using special hand-made decorative fabrics. Historically, the bindi was traditionally made by the tribal people in India and was designed to decorate the entrance of the homes of holy persons or family elders. The art of making the bindi gradually spread throughout the region and gradually became a part of the Indian culture and custom. The bindi is basically a dried out piece of rice left in the rice cooker to dry and boil.
