Maria’s former husband served in the armed forces, and it was not until after twenty-one years of marriage that she decided to change her nationality from Romanian to US. Maria obtained US citizenship because she wanted to escape the marital bed and reestablish her life in the United States. She is not alone in changing her nationality, as many others have done in the last century. Changing one’s nationality requires waiting for at least six months. Some countries accept change of nationality quickly, while some take longer.
