There was a great deal of negative press surrounding Katrina Maria, the Puerto Rican Nationality singer. She made waves when she announced that she was going to give her very own song to Obama because he was the president of the United States. What many people failed to understand, is that Nationality is not an issue in Puerto Rico. The island is American, and Nationality is not an option. Rather it should be understood that she has been an integral part of our musical culture for decades, and in keeping with the tradition of many cultures throughout the world.
Nationality is nothing more than the law of probability. That’s right, every Hispanic, African-American, Chinese person born in America is automatically considered a Hispanic, regardless of race or birth date. That means that in terms of BMI (Body Mass Index) or height, any person of any nationality can be considered to be of Hispanic descent. Further, there are three primary racial categories – European, Middle Eastern, and African-American. Therefore, as a Puerto Rican, Obama could be considered a Middle Easterner due to his accent and skin color, and not really of African descent because he has dark skin.
For whatever reason, it is perfectly fine for a Puerto Rican to marry an individual of another race, such as an African-American or Caucasian. In fact, most Hispanics love all races equally, as they are just like all other people. Marriage between a Hispanic and an African-American can further strengthen ties of cultural identity. Therefore, a lot of good can come out of Obama marrying Katrina Maria, given her status as a Cuban National. Still, I doubt that this will have much impact on Obama’s political future.
