Winner of the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay, Juliana Carvalho is an actress with a flair for lending humanity to seemingly apathetic characters. Born in Brazil, the young Juniano is described as being “so simple”, yet intelligent; the kind of child that says “if you follow me, then I will surely show you the way”. Following her mother and older sister out of the country during their adolescence, Juliana was taken under the wing of Dr. de Souza, a renowned Pediatrician. The doctor would oversee the young girl’s advancement from childhood to adulthood, tutoring her in everything from chemistry to anatomy, and teaching her that kindness must be earned.

Though Juliana was raised to believe that her height was a curse rather than something to be proud of, the truth is that it played a major role in the direction of her career. As her father grew sickly in his later years, Juliana took over the running of his clinic; though he refused medical treatment, she embraced the role of the older man as much as any other role she ever had. Appearing in a total of eleven films across four national films festivals (Brasileiras in Brazil, Argentina and France), the Brazilian beauty was at once iconic and established. From this point forward, Juliana Carvalho would present herself as a quintessential example of the persevering and strong character type.

Once she decided to give English another try, she found herself cast in the lead role in two more pics before settling down into a steady lead role in the last of her four Doctors movies. The next role that would mark her career was in the well-received Armani Exchange where she played the title role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. With this film’s stellar cast, and director Gore Verbinksi at the helm, Armani Exchange was another hit for Carvalho; this time earning her an Oscar nomination. These days, Juliana Carvalho is recognized for her work in both period dramas and action-filled thrillers; earning critical acclaim in both of these categories.
