1990s Fashion Trends in India

This article presents the first installment of a mini-series on the topic of 1990s fashion trends in India. This article traces the development of Fashion and Style in India from the Indira Gandhi era to the early 1990s, with a brief focus on the “New Look” for women. Indian women have always kept a close watch on fashion trends and I have noted that over the last two decades their interest in Fashion & Style has grown considerably. However, Indian Fashion was heavily influenced by the western fashion trends during the 80s – as seen in popular fashion shows like ‘The Grand Prix’ and ‘Dollars’.

The ‘New Look’ for women is the result of the variety of changes that have occurred in the Indian dressing habits over the last two decades. For example: a long sari has been replaced by salwar kameez (a loose trouser) and it has come to be worn interchangeably with churidar (lehenga), saree (traditional Indian saree), lehenga (traditional Indian sleeveless gown), kurta (kimono), choli (dressed gown), etc. New patterns like ‘boa beadwork’, ‘box cut’, ‘box scarves’ and etc., have emerged and have been incorporated in Indian fashion trends. The popularity of embellished garments like gaga (embroidery) and hard work, long flowing Sarees, etc., have also contributed to the increased popularity of Indian Clothing.

However, the most interesting aspect of Indian Fashion Trends is found in the area of Color. The combination of rich colors like red, yellow, gold and silver, have created a “Hollywood” look that has captured the hearts of many fashion conscious Indians. Richly embroidered saris (exquisite cloth work) and colorful Kurtas are in high demand. Also, blue, maroon, and violet color combinations have created a sensation among the Indian masses. These colors not only enrich the wearer’s wardrobe but also give him a trendy look.
