1990 to 2021 Fashion Trends
Trends in fashion have their cycles, which are known as Fashion Trend cycles. The 1990’s were the “Lyrical” Fashion Trends, which were characterized by a style that was more akin to poetry than anything else. The “ibe,” was all about color, simplicity, and bright colors. It seemed as though we were trying to communicate to the world that there was hope after the end of the millennium; whereas in truth, this “ibe” fizzled out rather quickly and decidedly looked dated.
As mentioned before, the next decade (1991 to 2021) brought about a new “ibe,” which was even more diverse, edgier, bolder, and altogether racier. These new fashion trends were referred to as the Art Deco period. Fashion for this decade was heavily influenced by the works of Christopher Columbus, Florence Knoll, and the works of the London-based artists Jasper Johns and Frank Stella.
For the next decade, the decade that I call the Postmodern era, fashion trends would again be dictated largely by one’s personal preferences. Art Deco style would once again dominate the fashion scene with an abundance of geometric patterns, bold colors, and complex shapes. As an example, you may find the ubiquitous blue and white checks being worn by both genders by those that felt they were “unfashionable,” whereas some would sport bright reds and purples. Even though the Art Deco fashion movement was well underway, it fizzled out somewhat but has yet to completely disappear. No doubt we will see much more Art Deco inspired attire in the coming years to come!
