A Muslim cleric has offered to lead the search for the killer of India’s most famous Hindu-Muslim, JNU student Kanhaiya Kumar.

Sarfraz Ahmed Dar, a former member of the Jamaat-e-Islami movement, said he was interested in finding the attacker, who left his home at 2am on Monday and was picked up by intelligence agents, the Times of India reported.

“I will investigate this issue very deeply and I will reach out [to the] investigation team by contacting the head of intelligence. I will tell them I saw what happened in front [of my eyes]. I will take the responsibility,” Dar said.

Dar had suggested that Kumar and his co-residents at Ramjas college should be given extra security. Kumar’s co-teachers and the college’s headmaster had told him to remain at home.

But Dar on Sunday told news channels that the students should not be given security because they would be the “opponents of Islam”.

Kumar, 20, was one of hundreds of students from India’s top universities gathered in New Delhi for a protest over the controversial incident on Friday.

Kumar’s family has been criticised on social media, with many accusing them of being hypocrites who have been trying to make money by taking a tough stand on Islam.

India denies any knowledge of the attacker who is the first Islamist to kill a Hindu student in the country in a decade.

On Sunday, he was released on bail after spending a night in a government jail.

Last week, police confirmed they had made a major breakthrough in the case, but did not give details.
